In Northern and Southern Greece

1 When the uproar had ended, Paul summoned the disciples to him and encouraged them. Then he said goodbye to them and traveled to northern Greece. 2 He began moving from place to place throughout that region, encouraging people with many words. Then finally he reached southern Greece, 3 and he stayed there* for three months. While he was preparing to travel by way of the sea to Syria, the Jews plotted to kill him, so he decided to return by way of northern Greece. 4 Among his companions were Sopater son of Pyrrhus from Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, and also Timothy. From the province of Asia, he had with him Tychicus and Trophimus. 5 These men went ahead of us* to Troas and waited for us there. 6 As for us, we traveled by sea from Philippi after the Festival of Unleavened Bread.* After five days we caught up with them in Troas, and we stayed there for seven days.

Paul Raises a Dead Man

7 On Sunday we gathered together to eat bread. Paul started preaching to the people, and he prolonged his speech until midnight, because he intended to travel the next day. 8 There were many lamps in the upper story where we were gathered. 9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window. He was overcome by drowsiness while Paul was in the midst of a long speech. When he sank into a deep sleep, he fell from the third story to the ground, and they picked him up dead. 10 Paul went down, threw himself on the young man, and embraced him. He said, “Don't be upset; he's alive!” 11 Then Paul went upstairs, broke bread, and ate. He resumed his talk until daybreak, and then he departed. 12 They took the young man to his house alive and were greatly comforted.

Paul Says Goodbye to the Elders at Ephesus

13 We boarded a ship ahead of Paul and sailed to Assos so that he could get on board with us from there, for he had arranged to go to Assos on foot. 14 When he caught up with us there, we took him with us and went to the port of Mitylene. 15 The next day we sailed from there and came near the island of Kios. On the third day we passed by the island of Samos, and on the fourth day we arrived at Miletus. 16 Paul had decided to bypass Ephesus in his travel so that he would not be delayed in Asia. For he wanted to hurry to reach Jerusalem before the Day of Pentecost,* if possible.

17 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus, summoning the elders of the group of believers. 18 When they arrived, he said to them, “You know the way I lived during the time I spent with you, from the first day I came to Asia. 19 I have served the Messiah with all humility and with tears, in spite of the difficult trials that afflicted me because of the plots of the Jews. 20 And you know that I didn't hold back anything from you that would benefit you, but preached to you and taught you, publicly and from house to house. 21 I have been telling Jews and others that they should turn to God and repent and should believe in our Master Jesus.

22 “Now I am going to Jerusalem at the prompting of the Spirit. I don't know what awaits me there; 23 I only know that the Holy Spirit reveals to me in every city that chains and difficulties await me. 24 Yet my life is not important to me; rather, the important thing is that I carry out my mission and complete the work that our Master Jesus commissioned me [to do], which is to inform [people] about the good news of God's blessing. 25 And I know that you will not see my face after today — all of you among whom I have gone about announcing the good news of the establishing of the Kingdom of God. 26 Therefore, I announce to you all today that if one of you perishes, I'm not responsible for him. 27 For I did not hold back from announcing all of God's will to you. 28 So guard yourselves and all the flock over which the Holy Spirit has established you as shepherds. Take care of the community of our Lord, which he purchased with his blood.

29 “I know that after my departure, there will come in among you predatory wolves who have no pity for the flock. 30 Even some from among you will rise up and distort the truth in order to attract disciples to follow them. 31 So be careful! Remember that for three years I did not stop warning every one of you with tears, night and day.

32 “And now I entrust you to God and the message of his blessing, for it is able to build you up and give you a share with all of God's own people. 33 I have never desired anyone's silver or gold or clothing. 34 On the contrary, you know that I worked with these hands to pay for my needs and the needs of those with me, 35 and I have made it clear to you in every way that we should work and toil so we can help those who are weak. Remember the words of our Master Jesus: ‘The blessing is in the giving more than the receiving.’”

36 When Paul had said this, he knelt down on his knees with all of them and prayed. 37 They all wept, and they embraced him and kissed him. 38 They felt sad, especially because he had said that they wouldn't see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.
