Jesus is the Way

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God, and have faith in me. 2 In my Father's home* there are many dwelling places. If this weren't true, I wouldn't have said it to you. I'm going to prepare a place for you. 3 After I go and prepare the place for you, I'll come back and take you with me, so you'll be in the place where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I'm going.”

5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way; I am the truth; I am the life. No one can come to the Father* except through me. 7 If you have known me, then you will know my Father as well. Indeed, from now on you do know him, and you have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “I've been with you all this time, and yet you don't know me, Philip? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. So how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don't you believe that I'm in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I don't speak on my own; rather, the Father is the one who lives in me and does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe this because of the miracles themselves. 12 I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do [even] greater than that, because I'm going to the Father. 13 Everything that you request in my name* I will do, so that the Father may be glorified through the Son. 14 If you request anything in my name, I will do it.

The Promise to Send the Holy Spirit

15 “If you love me, you will do the things I've commanded you. 16 I'll ask the Father, and he'll give you another helper,* who will remain with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the people of the world don't receive, because they neither see him nor know him. But you know him, because he's with you, and he will be in you. 18 I won't leave you as orphans; indeed, I'll return to you. 19 After a little while, the world won't see me. As for you, you will see me. And because I'm alive, you also will live. 20 On that day, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever accepts my commandments and does them is one who loves me. My Father loves anyone who loves me, and I love him, and I'll reveal myself to him.”

22 Judas — not Iscariot — said to him, “Master, how can you reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “Anyone who loves me does what I say, and my Father loves him, and we will come to him and live with him. 24 But anyone who doesn't love me doesn't do what I say. And these words that you hear me say are not mine, but are the words of the Father who sent me.

25 “I have said this to you while I'm [still] with you. 26 As for the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. The world is unable to give you anything like what I give you. Don't let your hearts be troubled; don't be afraid. 28 You heard what I said: ‘I'm going; then I'll return to you.’ If you love me, rejoice that I'm going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am.

29 I have informed you of this now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe. 30 I won't speak longer, because the leader of this world* is approaching. He has no authority over me, 31 but the world must know that I love the Father and that I do what he has commanded me to do. Get up! Let's go from here.

Definitions

*14:2 my Father's home: This is a reference to Paradise.

*14:6 the Father: This term refers to God and expresses his compassionate care for the people who are devoted to him. It is similar in meaning to the Arabic terms الله الولي and الرب. God is a father to everyone whom he accepts to himself as sons because they have accepted the Messiah and have been born anew spiritually by the power of the Holy Spirit.

*14:16 another helper: The next verse says that this is a reference to God's Holy Spirit, who will be with every true follower of Jesus the Messiah. The word helper is a translation of the Greek word paraklētos, which means a person who comes alongside someone to guide him, encourage him, and strengthen him.
