Stephen's Speech

1 Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these accusations true?” 2 Stephen replied, “My brothers and fathers, listen to me. God Most Glorious appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran* 3 and told him, ‘Leave your land and your relatives, and go out to the land that I will show you.’* 4 So he left the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran, and after his father died, God relocated him from there to this land that you dwell in now. 5 He did not give him a share [of land] in it, not even a [square] foot. However, he promised him that it would belong to him and his descendants after him, even though he had no children at that time.

6 “God told him, ‘Your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land for four hundred years, and they will be enslaved and oppressed. 7 But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and after that they will come out of that country and worship me here in this place.’* 8 Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision.* In accordance with this [covenant], when his son Isaac was born, he circumcised him on the eighth day. Then Isaac circumcised his son Jacob, and Jacob also circumcised his sons, namely our twelve patriarchs.

9 “The patriarchs envied Joseph and sold him as a slave to Egypt, but God was with him 10 and rescued him from all his calamities. He gave him wisdom and caused Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to be pleased with him. So he appointed him governor over Egypt and over his entire palace.

11 “But a famine occurred in all of Egypt and Canaan, and the people suffered greatly. Our forefathers needed food. 12 So when Jacob heard that there was wheat in Egypt, he sent our forefathers there for the first time. 13 On the second visit, Joseph made himself known to them, and Pharaoh heard of Joseph's family. 14 Then Joseph sent [word] and summoned his father Jacob and all of his household; they were seventy-five persons. 15 Then Jacob went down to Egypt, and he died there — he and our forefathers. 16 They* were transported to Shechem* and buried in the tomb which Abraham had bought from the sons of Hamor in Shechem for a sum of money.

17 “As the time drew near for God to fulfill his promise that he had given to Abraham, our people in Egypt were increasing and growing in number. 18 But then another king arose over Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph. 19 He defrauded our people, oppressed our forefathers, and forced them to leave their infants outside of the house so they would die. 20 At that time Moses was born, and he was a very beautiful [baby]. He was raised for three months in his father's house. 21 When his family gave him up, Pharaoh's daughter took him and raised him as her son. 22 Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he became great in his words and deeds.

23 “When he was forty years old, it crossed his mind to visit his brothers, the Children of Israel. 24 He saw an Egyptian abusing one of them, so he defended the victim and avenged him, killing the Egyptian. 25 He assumed that his brothers would understand that God was using him in this [way] to rescue them, but they didn't understand. 26 The next day he came across two of them quarreling. He tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘You are brothers. Why is one of you abusing the other?’ 27 But the one who was abusing the other pushed Moses aside and said to him, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge over us? 28 Do you want to kill me, just as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ 29 When Moses heard this, he fled to the land of Midian* and lived there as a foreigner. There he had two sons.

30 “After forty years, an angel appeared to him in a flame of fire in a thornbush. This was in the desert of Mount Sinai. 31 Moses was amazed at the sight and came closer to observe. Then he heard the voice of God say to him, 32 ‘I am the God of your forefathers,* the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses was frightened and did not dare to look. 33 Then God said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, because the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groans and have come down to rescue them. Now come, for I am sending you to Egypt.’

35 “This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge over us?’ [is the one] God sent, through the angel who appeared to him in the thornbush, to be their ruler and savior. 36 He is the one who took them out of Egypt by working wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert. 37 This Moses is the one who told the Children of Israel, ‘God will send you, from among your own people, a prophet like me.’* 38 And he is the one who was with the assembly of people in the wilderness, a mediator between the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai and our forefathers. He received life-giving words* and gave them to us.

39 “But our forefathers refused to obey Moses and did not accept him; instead they returned in their hearts to Egypt. 40 They told Aaron*, ‘Make us gods to lead us in our walk, because Moses — this person who brought us out of Egypt — we do not know what has happened to him.’* 41 At that time, they made an idol that resembled a calf, and they offered sacrifices to it and rejoiced in something that they had made with their [own] hands. 42 But God abandoned them and gave them over to worship the stars of the sky, as the inspired [text] says in the Book of the Prophets: ‘You Children of Israel, did you offer me sacrifices and offerings for forty years in the desert? 43 No, rather you carried with you the tent for worshiping the god Moloch and the star of the god Rephan, which are idols you made [in order] to worship them. Therefore, I will exile you beyond Babylon.’*

44 “When our forefathers were in the desert, the Tent of the Covenant* was with them. Moses made it according to the model he saw, as God commanded him. 45 After that, our forefathers received it and brought it to this land under the leadership of Joshua. For they entered this land after God had driven out from before them the ethnic groups who were in it. The Tent stayed here until the time of David. 46 David found favor with God, so he asked God to allow him to build a dwelling for [him], the Lord of Jacob;* 47 but it was Solomon who built a house for him. 48 However, the Most High God does not dwell in houses made by humans. As the prophet said, 49 ‘God said, “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is the place where I put my feet. So can you build a house for me? Or a place for me to rest in? 50 Didn't I myself make all these things with my hand?”’”*

51 Then Stephen said, “You stubborn people whose hearts are hard and your ears deaf! You are like your forefathers, always resisting the Holy Spirit. 52 Is there one prophet that they did not persecute? They even killed the apostles [of God] who prophesied beforehand about the coming of the Righteous One.* And now you have betrayed him and murdered him. 53 You are the ones who received the Torah, through angels, and yet you did not comply with it.”

The Killing of Stephen

54 When the council members heard this, they were enraged, and they gnashed their teeth in rage. 55 But Stephen looked to heaven, and being full of the Holy Spirit, he saw the glory of God and [saw] Jesus standing to the right of God. 56 He said, “Look! I see heaven open and the One Who Became Man* standing to the right of God.” 57 Then they stopped their ears and shouted at the top of their voices. They all attacked him in unison, 58 took him out of the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses put their coats at the feet of a young man whose name was Saul.

59 As they were stoning Stephen, he prayed and said, “My Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 Then he fell to his knees and shouted, “My Lord, do not count this sin against them!” And when he had said this, he passed away.

*7:8 the covenant of circumcision: God's promise to give the land of Canaan (Palestine) to the prophet Abraham and his descendants as long as they obeyed him and circumcised the males among them. This circumcision was a sign of their faith in God and their commitment to God's covenant. See Torah, Genesis 17:1-14.

*7:16 They: This is a reference to the forefathers, meaning the sons of the prophet Jacob. As for Jacob, he was buried in the tomb at Hebron where his father Isaac was buried and his grandfather Abraham.

*7:16 Shechem: a town 41 miles (65 km) north of Jerusalem. Today it is the city of Nablus in the West Bank.

*7:29 Midian: a region in northwestern Arabia along the eastern side of the Gulf of Aqaba.

*7:32 God of your forefathers: Or the Lord of your forefathers.

*7:37 This is quoted from Torah, Deuteronomy 18:15.

*7:38 life-giving words: This is a reference to the Ten Commandments of God's covenant with the Children of Israel. See Torah, Deuteronomy 5:4-22.

*7:40 Aaron: the brother of the prophet Moses.

*7:40 This is quoted from Torah, Exodus 32:1.

*7:43 This is quoted from the Book of the Prophet Amos 5:25-27.

*7:44 the Tent of the Covenant: the tent that held the two tablets of God's covenant with the Children of Israel. On the tablets were written the ten commandments. This tent was also called the Tabernacle and the House of God and was a place of worship.

*7:46 Jacob: This word can have two meanings: (1) the prophet Jacob, who is also known by the name Israel, and (2) the descendants of the prophet Jacob, who are also known as the Children of Israel. This verse refers to building a temple in which the Children of Israel could worship God their Lord.

*7:50 This is quoted from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 66:1-2. God uses these metaphorical images of throne, feet, and hands to emphasize how much greater he is than anything earthly or human. These are figures of speech. They do not imply that God actually sits or has hands and feet as humans do.

*7:52 the Righteous One: the Messiah.

*7:56 One Who Became Man: Most English versions say the Son of Man. This is the term Jesus the Messiah used most often to describe himself. It is based on a prophecy in the Book of the Prophet Daniel (7:13-14) in which the Messiah approaches the throne of God and is given authority to rule all people forever. God says in the Gospel (John 1:1-14) that Jesus is the Word of God whom God sent to the world as a human. Jesus said (John 3:13), “No one has ascended to heaven except the one who descended from heaven, that is, the Son of Man.” But because the traditional translation “The Son of Man” is often misunderstood, it has been translated here as “The One Who Became Man.” Some other Arabic translations say سيد البشر “the Master of mankind.”
