Pharisees:

members of a sect within Judaism that followed very strictly the laws of the Torah and their own religious laws.

The word "pharisee" meant "separated"; they separated themselves from anyone who did not follow their body of religious laws and regarded them as sinners, while regarding themselves as righteous.
