Satan Tests Jesus
1 Jesus headed back from the Jordan River, full of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit led him in the desert, 2 where the devil* tested him for forty days. He ate nothing that whole time, so when it ended, he was hungry. 3 Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, then tell this stone to turn into bread.”* 4 But Jesus answered him, “The Scriptures* say, ‘It's not by bread alone that a person lives.’”*
5 Then the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in a moment all the kingdoms of the world, 6 and he said to him, “I will give you authority over all these kingdoms as well as the grandeur in them, because it has been given to me, and I can give it to whomever I wish. 7 So, if you will bow down to me, it will all be yours.” 8 Jesus replied to him, “The Scriptures say, ‘Bow down to the Lord your God and worship him — him alone.’”*
9 Then the devil led him to Jerusalem and stood him on the highest place in the Temple complex. Then he said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here! 10 For the Scriptures say, ‘He will command his angels to protect you, 11 and they will hold you up on their hands so that you will not hit your foot against a stone.’”* 12 Jesus replied to him, “The Scriptures say, ‘Do not test the Lord your God.’”* 13 So when the devil had finished every test, he left him until the time should come for another opportunity.
14 Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about him spread throughout the whole region. 15 He began teaching in the houses of worship,* and everyone regarded him highly.

Nazareth Admires Jesus
16 Then he came to Nazareth, where he had grown up. On Saturday,* he went to the house of worship in accordance with his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and they presented him the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. When he opened it, he found the place where it is written:* 18 “The Spirit of God is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and sight to the blind, to set the oppressed free,* 19 and to announce the advent of the year of God's approval.”*
20 Then he closed the book, handed it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the house of worship were directed at him. 21 Then he began to address them and said, “This passage which you heard was fulfilled today.”* 22 All of them were commending him; they were amazed at the gracious words that came out of his mouth, and they asked, “Isn't this Joseph's son?” 23 Then he said to them, “No doubt you will say this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself.’ Do here in your hometown the things that we heard you did in Capernaum.”*

Nazareth Rejects Jesus
24 He went on to say, “I tell you the truth,* no prophet is accepted in his hometown. 25 The fact is that in Elijah's days, God prevented it from raining* for three years and six months, and a great famine occurred in all the land. At that time there were many widows among the Children of Israel, 26 yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. Rather he was sent to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27 And in the days of the prophet Elisha, there were many among the Children of Israel afflicted with leprosy, and not one of them was healed, but Naaman the Syrian was healed.”*
28 All those present in the house of worship were enraged when they heard this statement. 29 They rose up and started pushing him outside the town. They took him to the edge of the hill on which their town was built, to throw him down. 30 But he passed through their midst and went on.

Jesus Expels an Evil Spirit
31 He went down to Capernaum, a town in the region of Galilee, and began teaching the people on Saturdays. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because there was authority in what he said. 33 Now there was, in the house of worship, a man in whom there was the spirit of an evil demon, and he shouted at the top of his voice, 34 “Ahh! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are! You are the Holy One of God!”* 35 Jesus rebuked him and said to him, “Keep quiet and come out of him!” At that, the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without hurting him. 36 Everyone was astonished, and they said to one another, “What [kind of] message is this?! For he, with authority and power, commands the evil spirits, and they come out!” 37 So the news about Jesus spread throughout that entire region.

He Heals Simon's Mother-in-Law
38 He left the house of worship and entered the house of Simon. The mother-in-law of Simon was suffering with a severe fever, so they asked him to heal her. 39 He leaned toward her and ordered the fever to leave her, and it left her. She got up at once and began to serve them.

He Heals Many
40 At sundown, everyone brought to Jesus those in their [homes] who were sick with various diseases.* He placed his hands on each one of them and healed them. 41 Demons came out of many people as well, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”* So he would rebuke them and not allow them to speak, since they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, he went out to an isolated place. The crowd, however, was looking for him, and when they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said to them, “I must proclaim the good news of the founding of the Kingdom of God to other towns as well, because I was sent for this purpose.”* 44 So he went on, proclaiming the good news in the houses of worship which were in the region.
*4:3 See the text and footnote at Luke 3:22, where God proclaims that Jesus is his beloved Son, the Messiah. The devil is casting doubt on that.
*4:4 The Scriptures: Or the Book. This is a reference to the Torah of Moses, the Book of Psalms, and the Writings of the Prophets. See Luke 24:44.
*4:4 This is quoted from the Torah, Deuteronomy 8:3.
*4:8 This is quoted from the Torah, Deuteronomy 6:13.
*4:10-11 This is quoted from the Book of Psalms 91:11-12.
*4:12 This is quoted from the Torah, Deuteronomy 6:16.
*4:15 houses of worship: Most English versions say synagogues, a word that means Jewish houses of worship.
*4:16 Saturday: Most English versions say the Sabbath. This is the Hebrew term for Saturday. In the Hebrew language it means rest because the Torah declared Saturday to be a holy day on which people should rest from work.
*4:17 See the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 61:1-2, which is an ancient prophecy about the Messiah whom God promised to send.
*4:18 anointed me: When God chooses someone to serve him in the power of his Holy Spirit, the Scriptures say he's been “anointed” by God. The words Messiah and Christ are derived from the words for “anointed” in Hebrew and Greek, respectively. See Luke 2:11; Luke 3:22; and Gospel, Acts 10:38.
*4:18-19 See the Book of the Prophet Isaiah 61:1-2.
*4:21 fulfilled: A prophecy of a future event is said to be “fulfilled” when the event actually happens. In this case Jesus is reading to them a prophecy about the Messiah in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah, and he says that the prophecy is fulfilled in him, which means that he is the Messiah.
*4:23 Capernaum: a town on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) west of the Jordan River. Jesus moved there from Nazareth, which is 30 miles (48 km) to the southwest.
*4:27 leprosy: a skin disease. The word was used in the past to refer to a variety of skin diseases. People with a skin disease were regarded as unclean. They had to stay at a distance from other people, and they could not enter the Temple of God or the houses of worship.
*4:34 the Holy One of God: the Messiah, whom God sent, and who alone among people has never sinned in any way and is perfect in righteousness.
*4:40 The day of rest began at sundown on Friday and ended at sundown on Saturday. So on that Saturday, people waited until sundown to come to Jesus.
*4:43 Kingdom of God: In the centuries before the Messiah, God said in the Book of the Prophet Daniel (2:44), that at a future time he would establish a divine kingdom that would never end. When the time was right, God sent Jesus as the Messiah to establish the Kingdom of God on earth.
