Healing a Lame Man

1 One day, Peter and John went to the Temple complex for the three o'clock afternoon prayer.* 2 At the gate of the Temple of God, the one called the Beautiful Gate, there was a man lame since his birth. People used to carry him every day and put him there to ask for charity from those entering the Temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John going in, he asked them for charity. 4 Peter and John fixed their gaze on him, and then Peter said to him, “Look at us!” 5 He looked at them, expecting to get something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I don't have any money with me, but I'll give you what I have: In the name of the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, get up and walk!” 7 Then he took hold of him by his right hand and raised him up. At once his feet and his ankles were strengthened. 8 He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk. Then he entered with them into the Temple complex, walking, jumping, and praising God. 9 All the people who were there saw him walking and praising God. 10 They realized he was the beggar who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate. They were astounded and stunned by what had happened to him.

Peter Explains What Happened

11 The man kept close to Peter and John in a portico of the Temple known as the Portico of Solomon,* and everyone ran to them in shock. 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them, “Children of Israel, why are you amazed at this? Why are you looking at us as if we had made this man walk by our own power or piety? 13 It was the God of Abraham,* Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, [who] has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over to be killed and whom you rejected before Pilate,* even though he wanted to release him. 14 You rejected the Holy Righteous One and requested the pardon of a murderer! 15 You killed the Giver of Life, but God raised him from death. We are witnesses of this. 16 And this man, whom you see and know, was made strong through faith in the name of Jesus. [It is] faith in Jesus [that] has given him this complete healing, as you all can see.

17 “Now, brothers, I know that you and your leaders did this out of ignorance. 18 But God by this [means] fulfilled what he had foretold through all of the prophets, which is that his Messiah would suffer. 19 So, repent and return to God, so that he may wipe away your sins. Then times of refreshing will come from him, 20 and he will send the Messiah, whom he chose for you, namely Jesus. 21 For he must remain in heaven until the time for the restoration of all things, as God said long ago through his righteous prophets. 22 Moses* himself said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you from among your people a prophet like me. Obey everything he tells you. 23 Every one who does not obey him will be expelled from among the people.’* 24 Likewise, all the prophets prophesied about these days, beginning with Samuel* and every one who came after him with a message [from God]. 25 The blessings which those prophets prophesied about are for you, and for you likewise is the covenant which God gave your forefathers, when he said to Abraham, ‘Through your descendant I will bless all the ethnic groups of the earth.’* 26 God did raise up his servant, and he sent him to you first, to bless you by turning each of you away from your wicked behavior.”
